Ron Woodroofis een arbeider in een Amerikaanse olie-industrie, verslaafd aan misbruik van alcohol, drugs en seks. Vanwege een onbeschermde relatie met een drugsverslaafdehet hiv-virus oplopen, in het ziekenhuis hebben ze nog maar dertig dagen te leven. Zoals de meeste Amerikanen in de jaren tachtig koppelde Ron ziekteprofylaxe aan de homoseksuele achtergrond en verwierp daarom de diagnose. De omstandigheden verslechteren echter en hij wordt gedwongen zijn toestand te accepteren en wordt onder de hoede genomen van Dr. Eve Saks, hoofd van de afdeling experimentele behandeling bij AZT.
Ron wordt echter de toegang tot het experimentele programma ontzegd, dus begint hij de drug illegaal te verkrijgen. Zonder voorraden achtergelaten, wordt Ron ziek en ontmoet hij elkaar in het ziekenhuisRayon, Entransgender drugsverslaafde met aids. Om AZT te krijgen reist Ron naar Mexico, maar hier ontdekt hij dat de drug zeer schadelijk is voor de mens. Dus met de hulp van Dr. Vass begint de behandeling met Peptide T, een medicijn dat niet is goedgekeurd in de Verenigde Staten. Dallas Buyers Club - De strijd tussen David en Goliath
De film draait om het thema aids in de periode van maximale verspreiding: de jaren 80. Een probleem dat diep gevoeld wordt in de Verenigde Staten, een van de vlaggenstaten in de strijd tegen aids. InDallas Buyers Clubde ziekte wordt bijna een persoon van vlees en bloed, die zowel fysiek als mentaal en psychologisch moet worden bestreden. Ook al blijkt hij onoverwinnelijk, de hoofdpersoon probeert doktoren en ten tweede mensen duidelijk te maken dat aids te temmen is met de juiste behandelingen. Een resultaat dat, ook al leidt het niet tot de totale moord op het monster, toch een grote overwinning vertegenwoordigt.
Dallas Buyers Club - Ziekte als weg naar verlossing
Een ander belangrijk thema dat in de film aan bod komt, is dehomofobie. Ron Woodroof eigenlijk aan het begin vanDallas Buyers Clubhij is homofoob in elk gebaar, hij is weerzinwekkend voor de homoseksuele gemeenschap en daarbuiten, hij gelooft zelfs dat aids een ziekte was die alleen toebehoorde aan homo's en drugsverslaafden. Algemeen geloof in het Amerika van de jaren tachtig. Deze gedachte werd ook ingegeven door de onwetendheid van mensen over de ziekte, waardoor ze dachten dat alleen degenen die drugs gebruiken en homoseksuelen besmet konden worden. Maar de verhalen van Ron en zoveel andere mensen bewijzen het tegendeel. Nadat Ron is geïnfecteerd met het hiv-virus, verwerpt hij in eerste instantie het idee om, volgens de algemene overtuiging, opgenomen te worden in de homogemeenschap. Niet alleen hij zelf wijst deze vergelijking categorisch af, maar ook vrienden, collega's en gewone mensen, die hem homoseksueel noemen, ook al is hij dat niet.
Als hij begrijpt dat de ziekte ernstiger is dan verwacht, zal hij de wereld vanuit een ander perspectief gaan bekijken. Het moment van ziekenhuisopname wegens instorting zal voor hem van fundamenteel belang zijnbegint zijn reis van verlossing, aangezien de ontmoeting met de transgender Rayon zijn manier van denken en handelen zal veranderen. In eerste instantie verbindt hij zich ertoe de ziekte voor zichzelf te bestrijden, hij zoekt vervangende behandelingen voor AZT en importeert deze illegaal. Dan begrijpt hij dat ondanks het gevaar van de dood iedereen gelijk is, er zijn geen etoreseks of homoseksuelen meer, maar alleen mannen. Hiervoor opent hij samen met een transgender de "Dallas Buyers Club" en verwelkomt hij iedereen die hulp zoekt. Dus de ziekte van Ron wordt gelijkgesteld aan een pad naar verlossing. Door de zaak van de homoseksuele gemeenschap te helpen en te ondersteunen, is het alsof hij zijn eerdere zonden van homofobie wil verzoenen.
Technische aspecten
Het succes van de film was mede te danken aan deprachtig acteerwerk van Matthew McConaughey en Jered Leto. Het is geen toeval dat de twee acteurs de Academy Award voor Beste Acteur en Mannelijke Bijrol wonnen. Beiden speelden hun karakter perfect, de een als homofobe cowboy en de ander als hiv-positieve transgender. Ze zijn afgevallen (McConaughey is ongeveer 20 kg afgevallen, terwijl Leto meer dan 13 kg is afgevallen), ze hebben het uiterlijk aangenomen van twee echte aidspatiënten, waardoor de film en het verhaal geloofwaardig en echt echt zijn. Ze brengen woede, emotie en moedeloosheid over op de kijker die volledig begrijpt wat de echte Ron en Rayon voelden tijdens hun ziekte.

Paradoxaal genoeg is het de Amerikaanse regering die hen naar de dood leidt en niet naar de ziekte. En dat blijkt uit alle strijd die Ron Woodroof voerde om zijn eigen leven en dat van andere aidspatiënten te kunnen redden. Een doeltreffende film die de kijker zeker niet onverschillig laat, over een onderwerp dat ook nu nog voor discussie zorgt.
